A Tribute to Steve Jobs

A place to share your memories, wishes and prayers.

Steve Jobs was a long-time resident of Palo Alto. Out of respect for his family and their privacy, we're not reaching out to them directly during this difficult time.

What we would like to do, however, is invite you to help pay tribute to Steve Jobs and the impact he has had in this community, as a resident, a philanthropist, and as a friend to the countless people who new him.

Palo Alto Mayor Sid Espinosa said the community today lost a "great mind" and "incredible innovator."

"We live in a region of technology titans, but there are very few who really are recognized around the world as icons because of the impact that their innovations and leadership has had on the industry," said Espinosa. "Steve Jobs was one of those people, and it’s not just that you can walk downtown and go into any restaurant or store and see people on their iPods and iPads and other devices, it’s that you can see people in cities all around the globe and see that this technology and this brand in particular has had an impact in a very short period of time in every corner of the earth, and that is phenomenal."

Flavio Bonomi, a VP at Cisco and a neighbor who attended fundraisers at Steve Jobs' house, said this:

"I’m feeling sad and honored to have lived close to him. He really made a decision to live in the context of this neighborhood without living in an ivory tower."

Lisa van Dusen, whose kids went to with Jobs', said she often witnessed a different side of him than was typically represented in the media.

"My own experience of him was being a pretty private person, but I sensed this sort of tenderness and something gentle about him with his family," she said. "Just kind of lovely, but quiet. He wasn’t a big personality in that context. He just seemed very happy to be with his family."

How would you describe the impact Steve Jobs had on your life? Did you ever get to meet him? How will the city, or the world, change in his absence?
