Diagnose Your Skin Symptoms with This App

Dread the doctor's office? This Palo Alto health app let's you skip the trip and still get a diagnosis.

Last week, we wrote about the StartX Med's Gauss Surgical opening a new office and hiring. This week, we bring you DermLink, another Silicon Valley startup looking to expand their team.

The health technology company is led by CEO Victor Gane, who completed his Ph.D. in design process optimization from Stanford University and is originally from Europe. Gane’s co-founder Jamison Feramisco, M.D./Ph.D., acts as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Medical Officer for DermLink.

The two ran their first pilot while at Health Box in March 2012 after Gane began working on the problem of reducing the huge number of dermatologist visits in the United States. He said a major issue is that people have to wait a long time to get treated. They then launched during the summer, joining StartX in June 2012.

“Most skin conditions can be treated remotely,” Gane said. “The solution to reducing cost and increasing access to specially care is through technology, mobile apps and sensors. The mobile space is big since it’s become a prevalent means of communicating and buying things online.”

To use DermLink, one can log on to the site with their iPhone or any web app, enter their contact information and prefered pharmacy, fill out their medical history, answer questions regarding symptoms, then upload photos to submit to a dermatologist. Customers can be diagnosed and medication prescribed based on the photos. Gane said DermLink developed an algorithm for determining if photos are high quality enough for a diagnosis and that doctors notify patients if they need to resubmit a better resolution image.

“We’re not the only ones in the market, but it’s a great indication that the timing is there,” Gane said. “Our product is unique and comprehensive. We spent a lot of time on user interaction and receiving feedback.”

In fact, Gane said that the latest version of the technology will be a major update, taking into account user interface and interaction, making it a much more modern product.

Although Gane said they raised sufficient funds to move out of the StartX space, they have decided to stay there since they like being in the midst of the startup community with quick access to valuable resources.

What advice does Gane have for fledgling entrepreneurs?

“Work on something you’re passionate about, carefully choose your founding team – as they are key to the company succeeding or failing – and get to know as many people as you can for feedback.”

He has been in Silicon Valley for six years and he calls it one of the best places to be for developing products, ideas and services since there is a good amount of capital for sustaining innovation.

The company is looking to hire sales representatives experienced in the dermatology space, a Mobile app UX/UI designer and Technical  and customer support specialists. They are headquartered at 395 Page Mill Road, at the StartX office in Palo Alto, and also have an office in Chicago.
