Palo Alto Medical Foundation Receives a Grant

Palo Alto Medical Foundation officials, and two of its younger fans, received a $60,418 check as part of $2 million in grants the Safeway Foundation announced it will give back to community health programs and hospitals to launch grass-roots projects for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity in the Bay Area and nationwide.

Safeway presented the check to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation at its Menlo Park store - at 525 El Camino Real.  The grant will help fund an innovative online tool - "Way2GO"  that educates pre-teens and their families about the importance of healthy choices when snacking and eating as well as maintaining a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index).  

Schools may also use the tool.   

The “Innovative Approaches to Preventing Childhood Obesity” grants are a part of an overall outreach and commitment to community health that has become synonymous with Safeway Inc., one of the largest supermarket companies in the U.S.  

“Our commitment is to strengthen communities, create pioneering programs, expand services and implement new strategies to support the health of children and teens,” said Larree Renda, Safeway Executive Vice President and Chair of the Safeway Foundation.
