"Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview" will be shown for a week at BlueLight Cinemas starting May 11.
During the making of the 1995 TV series Triumph of the Nerds, Steve Jobs candidly spilled his thoughts on video for an hour -- after which most of the footage was thought to be lost. Recovered only recently in the form of a VHS copy in the director’s garage, the interview was remastered for the big screen. On Friday, it makes its one-week run at BlueLight Cinemas in Cupertino. “Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview” spotlights Bob Cringely’s memorable brain-picking session with the late Apple founder, ten years after he left the company following a fall-out with then-CEO John Sculley. At the time, Jobs was running niche computer company Next, which he would later sell before returning to Apple. In the interview, Jobs foresees technological …

Francis Tapon left the Silicon Valley tech world after a decade to travel Eastern Europe for three years. He presents his book based on his experiences Sunday at Philz Coffee in Palo Alto.
Starting in the perpetual daylight of Finland’s Arctic Circle, Francis Tapon, 42, wove his way through 25 countries in Eastern Europe. Three years and hundreds of pages of copious notes later, he emerged with a travelogue revealing a region of the world little explored by most Americans. Tapon’s The Hidden Europe: What Eastern Europeans Can Teach Us officially launched Saturday, April 28 — a date that coincides with the 20th anniversary of the fall of Yugoslavia. Tapon will read passages of his book -- as well as answer questions about Eastern Europe, world traveling and backpacking -- at Philz Coffee in Palo Alto from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Part witty travel tome, part colorful ethnographic study, the book is broken up into chapters on …

Share a favorite poem or poet with us here.
It seems appropriate that April, of all the 12 months, would be designated as National Poetry Month, as poetry has a rejuvenating power---and, like the spring, a good poem is transformative and effortless. However, according to the Poetry Foundation, 2012 marks the last time the art form will recognized in a month-long awareness campaign. Says Katherine Pryde, press secretary for the Chicago-based Poetry Foundation, “We don’t need it any more. Poetry—contemporary or centuries old, page-based or orally performed, ‘experimental’ or obviously traditional– has such a presence in every part of American life, every month of the year, that there’s just no point in devoting a single month to it.” So let's take this opportunity to sing the …

Famous American painter died Friday at the age of 54.
The Bay Area arts community was mourning the death of America's "Painter of Light" Friday with news that Thomas Kinkade had died. "Thom," as he was dearly called by friends and fellow artists in Los Gatos, is being remembered for bringing art to mainstream America, regardless of income levels and socio-economic backgrounds. "He had come to be an extremely affable man," said Los Gatos painter David Stonesifer, whose paintings grace local homes along with those of Kinkade's. "He was acting like a free spirit ... it was sort of like the kind of thing you wish would have happened to him years ago to have it reflected in his paintings." Stonesifer said he was "deeply saddened with the news." Millions of his "Kinkade paintings" adorn walls …

A desire to see the Marin County Civic Center leads finding a great place for kids to play.
Sometimes you just have to take the plunge, even if it doesn't end up how you would have wanted it. When I take spur-of-the-moment trips with my son around the Bay Area they are just that, unplanned. I get something in my head that I'm curious about and I decide it is a good idea to go exploring. That's my way. My husband's way to go on outings is to research first. He knows exactly where to go because he's looked at a map. He knows the times the place is open and, if money is involved, how much. This is a good policy for pretty much everything. But, I rarely follow it. I dive right in and usually something comes out. In this case, it was a trip to the Marin County Civic Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. My folks have an architect…

Redwood City's Club Fox will host a truly unique kind of benefit concert April 22 for the Palo Alto Fisher House, which houses the families of injured military while they are being treated in a hospital.
Few could disagree that our troops make a huge sacrifice for our country. Sometimes, that sacrifice includes major, traumatic injuries. That's why organizations like the Palo Alto Fisher House are so vital. Fisher House extends a home-away-from-home to military families that need to stay for extended periods to support their wounded loved one's recovery. In particular, the Palo Alto Fisher House is special in that it supports patients of the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Hospital, one of only five military hospitals in the country that is equipped to treat "polytraumatic injuries." On April 22, Redwood City's Club Fox will host a truly unprecedented benefit concert, with proceeds benefiting the Palo Alto Fisher House. The unique musical duo …
