Poll: State Prop Would Add $1 To Cost Of Cigarettes

Not surprisingly, Prop 29 is opposed by the tobacco industry. What do you think?

California's June 5 Presidential Election Primary may be relatively moot for Palo Alto voters, since it now appears presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has a lock on the Republican nomination, to face off against President Barack Obama in November. However, two statewide measures will be included on the June ballot; one adds $1.00 to the cost of a pack of cigarettes, the other limits the term of new legislators heading to Sacramento to 12 years, down from the present 14. Most controversial is the battle over Proposition 29, already being fought on television sets and radio channels around the state and here on the Peninsula. It imposes an additional tax on cigarettes to fund additional cancer research. "It's a do-good thing," says Gene …

Facebook Backs Boehner, Other GOP Candidates

Facebook's political arm also funding top Dems.

Facebook’s political action committee is backing the reelection campaigns of top congressional leaders, including House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, according to its latest Federal Elections Commission filing. In order to become certified by the FEC, Facebook Inc. PAC had to name five donation recipients, in addition to stating that they’ve been around for six months and have more than 50 members. The earliest listed contribution on the filing is to House Speaker John Boehner’s campaign, on February 15. Andrew, I'm certain that other companies in town have contributed to political candidates, as have high-wealth individuals. Are you more interested in learning about what people are backing a particular candidate, or which companies are making their money talk? Re: ECR/DSP Me too. Stay tuned for stories about that. Who’s Funding Eshoo’s 2012 Campaign?

Anna Eshoo’s top donors revealed.

A look at Open Secrets’ profile for U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) reveals a predominantly high-tech list of donors to her 2012 reelection campaign. Eshoo’s top backer is Gilead Sciences, of Foster City, which has given $22,000 to her campaign committee from individuals and PACs combined, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which runs OpenSecrets.org. Gilead’s PAC has given the same amount of money to Republicans as to Democrats so far this year: $10,000 each, including $5,000 to Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), $5,000 to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and $5,000 to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). In the number two slot is Oracle, which gave Eshoo $15,500 total this cycle. Oracle’s campaign spending has slightly favored …

Video: Anti-Romney Chants Reverberate Outside Fundraiser

Multiple protest groups coordinated parodies, sidewalk chants and rotating street parades to show their dissatisfaction with the presidential hopeful.

The Occupy protest groups mobilized days in advance for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s arrival, according to Redwood City Police Chief JR Gamez. Many donned “1%” personas as the group “Multi-Millionaires for Mitt.” The disparate groups were able to rally under similar banners, that Romney favors corporations over the working people, they chanted. View more photos of the event here.  “We gathered here to let Mr. Romney know that many Californians do not want him to be president,” said Landes Martilla of the Electric Workers’ Union. “We’re giving him a welcome befitting of a man who’s worth $200 million and complains that he’s unemployed.” The Occupy protest groups mobilized days in advance for Republican presidential nominee …

Photos: Romney Met By Protesters in Redwood City

The Republican presidential candidate came to town for a fundraising dinner early this evening at the Hotel Sofitel.

Protesters from three groups were waiting for Presidential candidate Mitt Romney when he arrived for an exclusive fundraising dinner tonight in Redwood City. Activist groups protesting outside the 5:30 p.m. reception included Occupy Redwood City, Raging Grannies and the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment. Raging Grannies member Ruth Robertson said her group adopted "billionaire personas" as they stood outside the event with signs mocking people who were driving in to attend. Protesters wore fake fur and held signs reading "Corporations are People, Too," she said. "We think by mocking them it might bring them down a rung or two," Robertson said. Members of Occupy Redwood City also attended the protest as "pretend" …
