Anderson Collection at Stanford Opens to Public on Sept. 21 [VIDEO]

The Anderson Collection at Stanford University is the core of one of the world's most outstanding private assemblies of modern and contemporary American art.

The collection of 121 works of art by 86 artists is a gift from Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson and Mary Patricia Anderson Pence, the Bay Area family who built the collection over the last 50 years. 

Stanford constructed a permanent building exclusively for the collection within its expanding arts district. 

It is adjacent to Cantor Arts Center and the planned McMurtry Building for the Department of Art and Art History, and across Palm Drive from Bing Concert Hall and Frost Amphitheater. 

This remarkable art collection will strengthen Stanford's growing connection between the study, creation and experience of art.

The Anderson Collection opens to the public on Sunday, Sept. 21. 

Admission is free but a timed ticket system will be in place for the first two months. Visitors are encouraged to obtain a timed ticket on the Anderson Collection website starting in mid-August.

The Anderson Collection and Cantor Arts Center are offering a new, combined membership with special benefits at both museums including members-only access and special events the week before the public opening of the Anderson Collection. Member preview day is Saturday, Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Special public opening hours on Sunday, Sept. 21, are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Normal daily business hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; extended hours to 8 p.m. on Thursdays; the museum is closed on Tuesdays.

Parking along Museum Way is by permit only until 4 p.m. on weekdays; parking is free after 4 p.m. and on weekends. Limited metered parking is available along Lomita Drive in front of the museums, and a parking structure with both metered and permit parking is located on Roth Way. 

This parking structure is free after 4 p.m. weekdays and all day on weekends. Weekday parking is $2 per hour.

A free chartered shuttle will run between the Anderson Collection and the self-pay parking at Galvez Lot, between Galvez Street and Campus Drive, weekdays until Oct. 17. 

The local transit hub for bus and train services at Stanford is the Palo Alto Caltrain Station, located near the main entrance to campus near the intersections of Palm Drive, University Avenue and El Camino Real. 

Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle bus operates several routes on weekdays only. Line P along Palm Drive is the best shuttle to reach the Anderson Collection.

If you are traveling from San Francisco or San Jose, Caltrain is your most convenient option. 

A one-way trip from San Francisco takes approximately one hour; a one-way trip from San Jose takes approximately 40 minutes. 

Caltrain also connects with stations and shuttles serving the San Francisco and San Jose International Airports.
