Mountain Lion Spotted in Woodside Thursday

The puma was observed near Wunderlich County Park in an area considered mountain lion habitat.

A mountain lion was spotted in Woodside early this morning, San Mateo County emergency officials said.

The cat was seen at about 1:30 a.m. in the area of state Highway 84 between Fox Hill and Portola roads, near Wunderlich County Park.

That area is mountain lion habitat, and mountain lions tend to avoid contact with humans.

However, residents are advised to avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk and at night, when the cats are most active. In the event of an encounter, the advice is not to run, but rather to face the cat, yell, try to appear menacing and throw rocks or other objects at the animal.

More information on mountain lions is available on the Department of Fish and Wildlife's website at www.keepmewild.org.
