Lee Taylor has given the term fire hot sauce a new meaning.
Using vegetables from the Palo Alto fire house garden, the veteran firefighter created a scorching sauce he bottled for charity. Over the past decade, the proceeds of the product have gone toward scholarships for 70 local college-bound kids. In 2011 alone, the sauce has raised $17,000, according to a video on the San Francisco Chronicle’s website.
In the video, the veteran firefighter describes how “it’s pretty rewarding knowing the [hot sauce] is going to all 50 states,” he said, while proudly displaying red peppers from the fire department's backyard garden.
The enterprise has now expanded: The peppers are grown off site and bottled in Healdsburg.
The Palo Alto Firefighters Hot Sauce has its own website, through which it sells the product for $5 a bottle. The hot commodity is also available at several local stores, such as and . An extra plus: There’s a free local delivery option for Bay Area firefighters.
