Top Buzzworthy Stories of 2012

What a year! We held an election, marveled at the research done at Stanford University, and endured crime.

 

Patch reviews the Top 10 stories of 2012:

Earthquake Preparedness Drill—Held back in October, this statewide drill caught the imagination as local residents focus on safety.

Saying goodbye—Tony Reyes was known for his signature, Hey buddy!” so it was a terrible shock when he died in a crash on 101 back in October. Hundreds attended his funeral. 

Stanford’s Touch-sensitive Skin Heals Itself—In November, researchers announced a true medical miracle. They’ve designed an artificial skin that can heal tears, yet still “feel” being touched.

Getting into Stanford is the Holy Grail for tens of thousands of applicants each year. Patch shone a light on the admissions process.  

Crime reports unnerved residents too frequently in 2012. One weekly report, in particular, grabbed attention.   

Palo Alto residents are plugged into politics, from the local to the national level. So it was no surprise that the presidential debate schedule was among this year’s most viewed stories.  

Stanford makes another appearance in the Top 10, for research announced in November. Scientists developed the first all-carbon solar cell, “a promising alternative to the expensive materials used in photovoltaic devices today.”

Crime makes another appearance in the Top 10, this time a major drug bust made in February.  

Concern over a missing man from Redwood City, considered at-risk, gained widespread attention in Palo Alto.

The tragic death of a teenaged pedestrian on Highway 101 rounds out our Top 10.
