Traffic Signals, Road Upgrades Begin on Oregon Expressway

Major Palo Alto transportation artery to undergo year-long improvements causing commuting delays.

Over the next several months Oregon Expressway may not be quite so express.

Between Alma Street and Highway 101, this month the County of Santa Clara Roads and Airports Department will begin a construction project for road upgrades and traffic signal improvements.

Commuters will experience temporary delays. During weekday hours, one lane may be closed, but all lanes will be open at rush hour from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The construction will occur at every signalized intersection—and also along Middlefield Road from Garland Drive to Marion Avenue—and a new traffic signal will be constructed at Ross Road, according to the county.

Sidewalk, crosswalk and accessibility improvements and street repairs will take place on Oregon Expressway and adjacent streets.

Improvements to nearly 50-year-old Oregon Expressway have been in the works since 2008 and should cost approximately $4.6 million from federal, county, city and voter-approved funds.

The project will be completed by February 2014.
