VA Palo Alto Earns Award for Excellence

The Palo Alto facility is the only VA health system in California to receive the award.

For the second consecutive year, VA Palo Alto Health Care System has been recognized with the Silver Level California Awards for Performance Excellence (CAPE) Award from the California Council for Excellence (CCE).

VA Palo Alto Health Care System is the only Veterans Health Administration health care system in California to earn this distinction in 2012.

CAPE-recognized organizations exemplify the embodiment of leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; workforce focus; operations focus and results.

“As a Veteran-focused health care system, this prestigious recognition is another benchmark in our continual improvement journey to honor America’s Veterans through exceptional health care,” said Lisa Freeman, VA Palo Alto Health Care System Director. “I could not be more proud of our nearly 6,400 staff and volunteers who are continually ‘serving those who served.’”

Freeman noted that while receiving a CAPE or Baldrige Award is an admirable accomplishment, the purpose of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System’s journey is to use and adapt the award criteria to help evaluate the health care system’s performance, assess where improvements or increased innovation may be needed, and achieve improved results.

The CAPE Program, administered by the CCE, emulates the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and is the highest recognition in the state for performance excellence. The CAPE Program, employing the same rigorous criteria used on the national level, recognizes organizations that demonstrate continuous improvement and superior performance in the areas of leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, measurement/knowledge management, human resources, process management and business results.

“We are exceedingly proud of all our recipients as they have clearly demonstrated exceptional performance and are progressing on their efforts toward achieving excellence,” said Brent Duggleby, Chair of the CAPE Council. “As the CAPE program serves as California’s gateway to the nation’s Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, our Gold-level recipients can be recognized as being numbered among California’s, as well as the nation’s highest performing organizations.”

VA Palo Alto Health Care System will be honored along with other CAPE Award recipients at the CCE’s 19th Annual Conference & Awards Ceremony February 4th in Irvine, Calif.
