Viewfinder: The Last of the Juana Briones House

Despite the fight by friends, local historians and preservationists, demolition on this historical home has begun. Here are some last photos of the house before it is gone forever.

To the dismay of many in the community and in local preservationist circles, the demolition permit for the Juana Briones House in Palo Alto that had been on hold since 2007 was recently reinstated. In the last couple of weeks, workers have begun dismantling this piece of local history.

Palo Alto Patch managed to snap a few last photos of the house in some of its original glory as the demolition work begins.

The Juana Briones House was built by its namesake in the 1840s. Briones was a passionate and caring Latina businesswoman and humanitarian, for whom the current elementary school in Palo Alto is also named. Briones was a pioneer of holistic and herbal medicine and owned five properties in her lifetime. She gave much to her community and will be long remembered for her compassion, whether or not her old adobe home in Palo Alto remains standing.
