A Tree Planting for the Mayor

See a tree planted in honor of our new mayor, attend a book release party for a local author, learn more about Israel's Separation Wall, join in the fight against pancreatic cancer, and see rare images of Panama.

1. Today is the last day to RSVP for Canopy’s 15th Mayor Tree Planting, in honor of . Canopy is a nonprofit organization based in Palo Alto that works to grow healthy trees and healthy communities. Following the planting for Mayor Espinosa will be Canopy’s annual party and awards ceremony. It all takes place at the , 3921 Fabian Way. This event is free of charge, but space is limited. 2. Support local authors! This Thursday evening is the book release party for local author Lee McKenkie’s latest book, The Princess of Las Pulgas. 3. Israeli civil rights campaigners from the group Anarchists Against the Wall (AATW) will lead a discussion about Israel’s Separation Wall tonight, 7-9 p.m., in the Geology Corner at . AATW is a direct action group that was established in 2003 in response to the construction of the wall Israel is building on Palestinian land in the Occupied West Bank. The group works in cooperation with Palestinians in a joint popular struggle against the occupation. This event is sponsored by Stanford Students Confronting Apartheid by Israel, Jewish Voice for Peace’s south bay chapter, and the Peninsula Peace and Justice Center. 4. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PCAN) is an organization that creates hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. Tomorrow, on Jan. 19 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., PCAN’s Bay Area affiliate will hold an Information Meeting with Julie Fleshman, the CEO of PCAN. 5. The Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society invites all to its next meeting, to be held tomorrow, Jan. 19 at the Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. The theme of this month’s meeting is “Panama Wild!” Members Bob and Sue Cossins will share photos and talk about their experiences on their recent trip to Panama, when they joined local guides and bird experts to travel through Panama’s best bird habitat for 19 days. These monthly meetings, held on the third Wednesday, are always free. Refreshments will be served at 7:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 8.
