Book Sale, Kids Cooking Passover Meals, Soccer Tryouts, Minnie Mouse and Children’s Film Festival

Here are five fun activities going on in the area over the next week to help keep the kids entertained.

Why Go: Children’s books can get a little pricey, if you have a child that tears through them quickly and always wants more. So, how about a trip to the Friends of the Palo Alto Library Used Book Sale this weekend? With many books priced at just $1-3, you can let them go crazy, without draining the bank account! Plus, you’re supporting a great cause—keeping your local library alive.

PRE-TEEN GIRLS SOCCER TRYOUTS

Where/When: Email team leaders to set up a time and place to try out for the teams.

Why Go: If you have a pre-teen girl with boundless energy and a love for playing soccer, consider taking her to try out for one of a couple of local teams looking for new members. The Stanford Earthquakes (girls, under-13 soccer) is for girls born after July 31, 1997, who consider themselves to be high-level, highly competitive players. The team plays Copper Division and wants to move up. For more information or to set up an appointment to check out this team, email Paige Biorn at paigebiorn@yahoo.com. For younger girls, the Stanford Tsunami (girls, under-10 soccer) is also looking for new blood. This team is for girls born after July 31, 2000, and is also on the lookout for highly competitive players—the team won the Copper Division last year  and has since moved up to Bronze. RADIO DISNEY’S “MINNIE’S MASQUERADE” 

Where/When: The Great Mall, 447 Great Mall Dr., Milpitas. Saturday, 1-3 p.m. Event takes place in the court nearest Mall Entrance 2.

Why Go: Come celebrate the release of Disney’s newest DVD, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie’s Masquerade with family-friendly activities at the Great Mall. Kids will experience plenty of fun with the Radio Disney Road Crew, including “Minnie’s Masquerade” Character Challenge, music and a craft project. Plus, kids will enjoy Disney prizes and giveaways, such as “Minnie’s Masquerade” stickers and posters, while supplies last.

KIDS’ PASSOVER COOKING CLASS

Where/When: Whole Foods, 4800 El Camino Real, Los Altos. Saturday, 4-6 p.m.

Why Go: “The Culinary Dude” will introduce kids to meal options for the flourless holiday of Passover. The recipes made in this class will include Matzo Bri, Matzo Ball Soup, Passover Chicken Meatballs and Matzo Brittle. Children will learn a variety of cooking styles and techniques during this class, like sauté, simmer, slice, bake and blend. Best part is—you won’t have to worry about cooking dinner this night, because the kids get to eat everything they make at the end of class! Treat yourself to an early dinner out with your spouse while the kids are away cooking their own.

NOTE: If a minimum number of sign-ups are not reached, this class will be canceled, so be sure to check before arriving.

FIFTH-ANNUAL SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S FILM FESTIVAL  

Where/When: Children’s Discovery Museum, 180 Woz Way, San Jose. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 12:30-4:30 p.m. (12:30-1 p.m. for museum members only)

Why Go: More than 80 short, independent films from around the world have been selected by parents and educators to participate in this year's film festival. Several of the filmmakers will be on hand to answer questions. Check out a few of the films, or stay all day!

Pricing: Film festival is free with museum admission. Admission is $10 for age 1 and older. Infants under 1 are free. Seniors age 60 and older are $9. Museum members are free.
