Apple Takes Billion Dollar Bite Out of Samsung

Apple has been awarded a billion dollars in a bitter battle over patents. That could be upped to $3 billion.

A lawsuit that pitted Apple against Samsung in a billion-dollar-battle over patents has been decided by a federal jury. The panel ruled in Apple’s favor, awarding it $1 billion.

The jury ruled that the South Korean company had “willfully” violated the patents, which could lead to a tripling of the award, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

The patents cover technology in the iPhone and iPad, According to the ruling, Samsung used Apple’s technology without the company’s permission or compensation.

Samsung is expected to appeal the award. An appeal would be heard by the U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., which typically handles patent litigation.
