Techies Line Up to Drive Tesla Model S

Displayed at Engadget Expand last weekend, people lined up for test drives.

Palo Alto-based Tesla Motors has taken more than 15,000 orders for its Model S sedan, forcing customers to wait weeks for their new cars. It’s no wonder that there isn’t a bunch sitting around on car lots, which makes it tough to take a test drive.

Parked outside Fort Mason’s Festival Pavilion at last weekend’s Engadget Expand was a beautiful maroon Tesla Model S, with a clutch of people gathered around to check out its features.

Alexis Georgeson, Tesla Communications, called the electronics show “a great chance to show it off—get the public behind the wheel.”

According to Georgeson, some people spent more than an hour in line to get a chance at a test drive. “Everyone was extremely thrilled. These are tech savvy people, so they’re familiar with Tesla and excited to get behind the wheel for five minutes.”

If you missed your chance at Engadget Expand, Tesla has a Model S at its showroom just over the border in Menlo Park, at 300 El Camino Real.
