Mineral Baths for Tomatoes

Tomatoes? Half the country’s frozen in a Polar Vortex and yet we, the Mighty Gardeners of  NorCal, are already planting Sweet 100’s, Stupices, and San Francisco Fogs. Oh, pity us and our weather.

Since we are planting tomatoes, this might be a good time to consider stocking up on some Liquid Calcium. Calcium is a mineral that, for one reason or another, many tomato plants struggle to absorb. When tomatoes don’t get a healthy dose of calcium they will often develop blossom end rot, a blackening and decaying of the fruit opposite the stem. Trust us, blossom end rot is something to be avoided.

But lightly spray your young tomato plants with a solution of calcium chloride and you’ll have far fewer rotten tomatoes. It’s really just that simple. Down to Earth distributes liquid calcium chloride in handy 1 quart bottles and we at Common Ground are happy to provide it for you.
