Update: ‘Avoid The 13’ DUI Arrests at 72

Police in Palo Alto report there we no DUI arrests in that city over the long Memorial Day weekend.

Final Update, 4:30 p.m. May 28: From 12:01 a.m. Friday, May 24 through midnight Monday, May 27 officers representing 13 Santa Clara County law enforcement agencies arrested 72 people for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. That's fewer than the 80 arrests made during the 2012 holiday weekend.

Update, 9 a.m. May 29: Eleven more people were arrested Monday night for driving under the influence, bringing the holiday weekend total to 72 in Santa Clara County.
 
The Memorial Day Weekend Driving Under the Influence enforcement effort in Santa Clara County has resulted in a significant number of arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 13 DUI deployments.

From 12:01 a.m. Friday, May 24 through midnight Sunday, May 26, officers representing 13 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 61 people for driving under the influence or alcohol or drugs. Last year, there were 38 DUI arrests during the same 48 hour period. These numbers are in comparison to last years’ totals during the first two days of the four-day enforcement period.   

Local law enforcement officials, along with the California Highway Patrol are continuing stepped up DUI efforts throughout the Santa Clara County and the state through midnight Monday, May 27. Every officer is focusing on drinking drivers. Locally, extra DUI saturation patrols are being deployed in the town of Los Gatos.   

Police, Sheriff and the CHP officials are asking all motorists to help make their communities safer by calling 911 to report drunk drivers.   

Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Administration. 

Law enforcement officials throughout the area are asking anyone who sees a drunk driver to report it immediately by calling 911.
