Get Out: Bike Races, Food Tastings and More!

Welcome to our weekend planner, giving you the best weekend activities for Palo Alto and surrounding cities.

It’s Thursday, and if you have no idea what you’ll do for the weekend, Patch is coming to the rescue.

1. GRAN FONDO, BIKE CHALLENGE & TASTE OF PALO ALTO

Where/When: City Hall, 250 Hamilton Ave., Palo Alto; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Why go: Join the community for three City-sponsored events this Saturday: the Gran Fondo 60-90 mile bike ride or the smaller Echelon Challenge bike loop around downtown at 8 a.m., followed by “Taste of Palo Alto” on Hamilton Avenue and King Plaza from 12p.m. to 6 p.m., where you can sample bites from Palo Alto's local restaurants. Price: Registration is $50; ask donors for pledges of $3, $5, & $10 per lap. "Taste of Palo Alto" is free for riders; $25 adults; $15 kids.

Why go: Enjoy multicultural and continental dishes at California Cafe Bar & Grill's special event Restaurant Week, featuring three-course gourmet dinners. We suggest the house-made gnocchi, pan-seared salmon with 2009 Dry Creek Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc and some butterscotch bread pudding for dessert. Yum.

Why go: Check out this local vendor show featuring the work of local artists, foodies, and live musical performances. Sample food from some of the Bay Area's best food trucks!

Why go: Join the party and be ready to show your best hand. Tickets get you $25 in event chips to play blackjack, craps, or roulette.

Why go: Learn the "Grow Biointensive" method for composting at home, effectively recycling your kitchen scraps and learning to maximize carbon and nitrogen in your compost. Bring a five-gallon bucket of green material to the demonstration to start.
