A new hiking trail opens to the public today—Matadero Trail, which connects Page Mill Road and Foothill Expressway to Arastradero Road.
The trail, which offers beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay through the foothills, is open from sunup to sundown and has paved sections for bicyclists.
"This isn't a nature trail per se, but it crosses a variety of landscapes where one can see native oak trees, riparian communities, grasslands and wildflowers, birds and other wildlife," Stanford Director of Land Use and Environmental Planning Charles Carter said in a Stanford report.
Stanford constructed Matadero Trail as part of its agreement with Santa Clara County to offset the impact of additional university development.
Since there is no public parking at the trailhead, hikers should plan to walk or bike in to Matadero Trail.
"I walked the lower part of the trail two weeks ago myself and enjoyed it a lot," said Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss in a Stanford report. "It's a great addition to our recreational opportunities."
Find the trail on the southeast corner of Page Mill Road and Foothill Expressway and alongside Page Mill to Deer Creek Road (see map).
