Patch Picks: Learn A Language

Je vais prendre une orange, s'il vous plait. If you can't read this, it's time to brush up on your language skills—with a local summer class!

Looking for a new summer gig? Try learning Russian, or brush up on those high school Spanish skills. From casual cafe conversations to intense one-on-one instruction, this list gives you options to customize your language craving.

1. LANGUAGE ARTS IN PALO ALTO

Choose from a variety of language classes, from private lessons to practical conversation groups or business and travel-oriented sessions. Language Arts is about customizing the class to fit you or your business's needs--in the comfort of your home, at your place of work or at their center at 405 Lytton Avenue downtown. Fourteen languages offered, from Chinese to Croatian.

2. PALO ALTO ADULT SCHOOL

Aiming to fulfill the lifelong learning needs of its community, the Palo Alto Adult School offers language classes in six different languages: Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, German, Japanese and Italian. Choose from beginning to advanced classes, which usually take place in the evenings. Check their schedule for the first summer session, which starts June 15. Classes range from $54 to $72 for six weeks. All classes held at at 50 Embarcadero Road.

This language school for kids offers special summer camps for children ages five and up to learn French, Chinese or Spanish, as well as for English as a Second Language students. Check out their website to register for one of three summer sessions, including Food Extravaganza, Passport to Travel the World, and Zootopia. All sessions held at the Cohn Campus at 151 Laura Lane in Palo Alto.

4. MEETUP.COM

For a casual language learning environment that's free, check out meetup.com to find fellow linguaphiles near you meeting up to practice their language skills. Want to practice your French and wine taste at the same time? There's a group for you, like The Menlo Park French Conversation Group, which meets Tuesdays at Cafe Borrone in Menlo Park. 5. ABC LANGUAGE EXCHANGE

Choose from a long list of languages, from Cantonese to Urdu, at ABC in Menlo Park. Classes for both kids and adults are offered as private lessons or group sessions, online or in person, at all levels in four to 12-week periods. Check out their website for a list of summer classes.
