Professor Reappointed to Higher Ed Commission

Stanford professor emeritus Michael Kirst has served since May.

Gov. Jerry Brown announced various state appointments Tuesday, including four to Bay Area residents, according to the governor's office.

Stanford resident Michael Kirst, 72, has been reappointed to the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education, where he has served since May. He is a professor emeritus at Stanford University, where he has taught since 1969. This position is not compensated and requires state Senate confirmation.

Joseph Bielanski, 61, of San Francisco has been appointed to the California Community College Board of Governors. Since 2000 Bielanski has worked in a range of related positions at institutions, including Berkeley City College, the Peralta Community College District in Oakland and Vista Community College in Berkeley. The position does not require state Senate confirmation. Bielanski will receive $100 per diem for serving on the board.

Appointed to the post of associate director of the division of adult institutions at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is Kathleen Dickinson, 52, of Vacaville. Dickinson has worked for the CDCR since 1964. Compensation for the position is $134,964 and requires state Senate confirmation.

Jurena Storm, 37, will serve as a student representative to the California Community College Board of Governors. The Oakland resident is currently enrolled at the College of Alameda and the University of California at Berkeley. She will receive $100 per diem for the position, which does not require state Senate confirmation.
