SFO Runway Construction - When to Expect Delays

The number of planes arriving at SFO each hour will be cut by half, potentially causing significant flight delays.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has announced the temporary closure of some runways this coming weekend, in order to carry out construction activity for federally-mandated Runway Safety Areas.

The closure is scheduled for this Friday, Feb. 15 starting at 10 p.m., through Monday, Feb. 18 at 8 a.m. Specifically, runway 28-L will be closed.

This closure will allow crews to construct new threshold areas, lighting systems and navigational aids to comply with federal Runway Safety Area (RSA) requirements.

Originally planned for January, this work was postponed due to inclement weather. Scheduled dates remain subject to change based on weather conditions.

The overall Runway Safety Area project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2015.

During this closure, the arrival rate at SFO may be reduced from 60 aircraft per hour to 30 aircraft per hour. Delays for flights originating within a two-hour radius of SFO could occur during peak travel times between 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.

Travelers are strongly encouraged to contact their airline regarding potential delays during these dates.

In addition to possible flight delays, local residents are warned that the use of an alternate runway/approach pattern can result in additional noise for some areas on the ground.
