Two Stanford Students Named Rhodes Scholars
The pair will have their expenses paid at Oxford University in England for up to four years.
Two Stanford University students are on the list of 32 American students named as Rhodes Scholars. Margaret Hayden from Brunswick, Maine and Rachel Kolb from Los Ranchos, New Mexico will be awarded scholarships to study at Oxford University.
As Rhodes Scholars, their expenses will be paid for up to four years of study in England. The winners were selected from 838 applicants.
Missing out was Miles Unterreiner, who competed in the NCAA cross country championship in Louisville, Kentucky, and then hopped on a plane to Seattle where he learned that he would not receive a scholarship. Unterreiner’s day was disappointing all around—he suffered a hamstring injury and performed poorly in the meet.

When it was announced earlier in the week that Unterreiner would have to choose between competing in Louisville and attending the Rhodes Scholars event in Seattle, an anonymous donor stepped forward with a private jet to whisk him to Washington.
The American scholars will join an international group of students from around the world. Rhodes Scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes.
