Steve Jobs & The Source of Genius

I know, I know… you just couldn’t wait to read another article, blog post, or commentary about Steve Jobs’ decision to step down as Apple’s top dog.  What does it mean?  What does the future hold? What will I do if my iPhone breaks down?

Maybe THIS article will have all the answers.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I have no idea what the future holds for Apple or any other hi-tech company for that matter.  I’m not particularly adept at reading a crystal ball.  And I pray – as I do most every day – that my iPhone never breaks down, especially when I’m watching a movie or playing Angry Birds.

What I do know is that the genius of Steve Jobs will continue.

Think about it. When Babe Ruth retired, did baseball players all of a sudden stop hitting home runs? Of course not. Neither did people stop inventing new gadgets, writing magnificent symphonies, creating beautiful art work, or thinking way out-of-the-box after the days of Edison, Mozart, Van Gogh, and Einstein. Why? Because genius never ends.

Don't get me wrong. Steve Jobs has accomplished – and likely will continue to accomplish – some pretty amazing things, not least of which was taking a down-and-almost-out computer brand and turning it into the second biggest company in the world.  He also holds upwards of 300 patents. But he didn’t invent, nor does he hold the patent on, genius.

That had to have come from somewhere else.

To me genius isn’t something one acquires but what they manifest or reflect of the Divine. True, most of us could be doing a better job of showing it, but my sense is that genius is something we all have the capacity to express in whatever measure we choose to do so.

Of course, I realize that a lone blogger’s declaration that genius is a divine quality available to one and all probably won’t have any noticeable impact on the price of Apple’s stock. But it should at least give us hope that everything beautiful and simple and downright cool we associate with Steve Jobs and the incredible products he’s given the world will go on.

And who knows? Maybe someday we’ll all be watching movies and playing Angry Birds on the moon, thanks to the inspiration – and the genius – of the next Steve Jobs.
