A FEW VOWELS; O, U and E, an Ode to Emily
Vino Locale presents paintings by local artist Judy Gittelsohn from her new series
titled, A FEW VOWELS; O, U and E, an Ode to Emily.
Paintings are on exhibition July 15 through September 22, 2013.
Gittelsohn’s work is simultaneously exclusive and accessible. Her paintings are
abstract and open to interpretation, while the symbolism of the letters O, U and E
are solid and recognizable. The ease of Gittelsohn’s painting style comes
through free of distractions. Strong colors and roomy placement allow viewers to
breathe and travel through the paintings. With the memory of her cousin Emily
acting as her muse, Gittelsohn has constructed a tender and a solemn narrative
about each symbol.
Paintings are a tribute to her cousin, Emily Georges Gottfried who passed away
suddenly this January from a rare blood disease. Emily lived life large. She was
a song leader, a cantor and a community organizer. 1200 people attended her
funeral. Emily and Judy grew up together. In December Judy had half her thyroid
with a nodule removed resulting in her speech being rough and hard. Emily’s
singing and Judy’s impacted speaking ability, birthed this series considering
speech and the importance of vowels.
Oh, You, Emily.
