Palo Alto Arts Center Re-Opening Saturday

It's just part of all the fun available around the peninsula this weekend. There are festivals, fleets, flyovers and fairs galore.

There's really no need to leave the Peninsula this weekend.

For one thing, the Palo Alto Arts Center (1313 Newell Road) will be holding its Grand Opening on Saturday at 11 a.m., with free events and activities until 5 p.m.

If you think you know the Arts Center, well, this will be an exciting awakening.

Even the entrance has a new, artistic look. It's roomier and has a wide open feel to it. There are places to play and create that never existed before and every inch of the place has had something done to it.

There will be plenty of interactive exhibits and artwork, nearly all of it contributed by local artists.

An 8-year-old contributed his unique version of a teddy bear, a group of teenagers developed a unique look at technology and watch out for the ferns growing out from the wall.

All 391 entries to the tree exhibit will be on display one way or the other, and the over 200 entries for the Palo Alto Arts Center logo contest are also on display, with a special finalist plaque.

In addition to Palo Alto Mayor Yiaway Yeh, who will lead a committee of ribbon cutters, some of the city council members and art center members have exhibitions.

One thing to watch for is traffic. Stanford hosts Arizona at noon Saturday in a Pac-12 football game that is close to being a sellout.

The San Carlos Art & Wine Faire (Sat/Sun) the Chocolate Fest at the Congregational Church of Belmont (Fri/Sat) and Oktoberfest at the Hiller Aviation Museum (Fri.), there are more than enough activities to keep anyone from staying home to sort socks.

But for those who want to spread their wings a bit, Patch offers a rundown of the only-in-the-Bay Area confluence of art, wine, sports, culture, music, food AND Justin Bieber.

According to an article in Thursday's San Jose Mercury News, this weekend will be a perfect storm of high-profile events where literally there is something for everyone.

Let's start with the National League West Champion San Francisco Giants, who will face the red-hot Cincinnati Reds in the National League Division Series Saturday and Sunday at AT&T Park.

Let's hope the Giants don't mind playing with the sonic boom overhead of of the Blue Angels in celebration of Fleet Week, and, oh, yes, the America's Cup World Series regatta on the bay.

Add to that some Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park, Justin Bieber at Oracle Arena, and did we mention the 49ers are in town on Sunday vs. the Buffalo Bills?

The Rock 'n Roll Half Marathon will take place in San Jose, Florence and the Machine will play at Shoreline Amphitheater on Friday, and Madonna will stop in to San Jose for two concerts at HP Pavilion. Did we miss anything?
