Police K9s Who Gave Their Lives to be Remembered

Police officers from around the state will honor their fallen furry friends at UC Davis on Wednesday.

From a press release by the Police & Working K-9 Foundation. It has been edited by Patch.

On Wednesday police K9 teams from around the state will gather at the Faithful Partner Memorial at UC Davis to honor those California K-9s who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The work that officers and their K-9 partners perform to protect our communities is often dangerous and unpredictable.  Many times our loyal police dogs have been on the front lines, protecting both their fellow officers as well as members of their communities.

The San Francisco Police Department K9 Unit & the Golden Gate Division of the California Highway Patrol are among those who will send K9 teams. They will honoring and remembering K-9 Sendy, who was shot by a gunman during a search in Golden Gate Park in 1995.  They feel that it is important and always want to remember & pay tribute to K9 Sendy's courage and sacrifice.

This past Friday K-9 Drago of the Sacramento Sheriff's Dept. survived after being shot in the chest from a suspect firing at police after a high speed chase. It was only a year and a half earlier that K-9 Bodie of the Sacramento PD, who had to retire and is still recovering, almost lost his life from shots fired by a wanted felon at both Bodie and his partner after a similar pursuit.

While these brave police dogs and their fellow officers survived a harrowing ordeal, we have other brave K-9s who have lost their lives in the line of duty while protecting our communities.  It is these Faithful Partners who will be honored and remembered at the California "Faithful Partner" Law Enforcement K-9 Memorial with a full honor guard and procession of over 75 K-9 teams from the CHP, county sheriff's department and local police departments from around the state.
The event starts at 11 a.m. at the memorial at the UC Davis Vet School, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616
