Whats Going On?

The old Chuck Thompson's tennis courts are now being used by a "for profit" tennis school. Is the public getting any benefit from a project that cost 100's of thousands of dollars

Back in the 90's there was Chuck Thompsons Swim and Tennis Club on Middlefield Rd. It closed and there was an attempt to keep the tennis courts operating. The owner of the land was not interested but did agree to a land swap for property the city did own on Embarcadero Rd. A deal was cut and the city spent much money to install new tennis courts. The city did not want to operate the courts so it agreed to lease the courts to the adjacent Winter Lodge for a nominal fee. The public could only use the courts if it joined the Lodge at a respectable yearly fee. So the courts proved of little benefit to the public

Now the courts are being used by Kim Grant tennis school which I assume is paying rent to the Winter Lodge. Once again the citizens who paid bundles of money for the land and improvements are receiving little benefit. In my opinion the entire arrangement needs more transparency , especially now that the city is in dire need of revenues from any source possible. The public deserves to know.
