The allegations came to light based on collaborative work by police officers in Palo Alto and Milpitas a day after Thompson was arrested on bank robbery charges in Milpitas, police said.

In the Dec. 3 robbery, a man displayed a gun to a pharmacist at Walgreens at 300 University St. in Palo Alto, demanded the prescription pain killer, oxycontin, and left with a bottle of the drug the pharmacist handed him, police said.

On Jan. 9, a man used a handgun to rob cash from the Provident Credit Union at 2390 El Camino Real in Palo Alto.

Police in Milpitas arrested Thompson on Tuesday in connection with the March 9 robbery of Chase Bank at 37 N. Milpitas Blvd.

In that case, a man walked into the bank with a firearm and handed a demand note to a teller, police said.

The man then fled with cash he robbed from the teller, according to police.

Milpitas police, in a joint investigation with San Jose police, found Thompson and arrested him Emeryville.

Officers said Thompson possessed a revolver, an air gun, methamphetamine and heroin.

Thompson also may be responsible for the robberies of banks in San Francisco and Redwood City and retail stores in Santa Clara and Fremont, police said.
