Caltrain: Person Likely Committed Suicide on Tracks

Officials believe that the person struck Thursday night in Atherton intentionally stepped in front of an approaching train.

An adult male killed by a train in Atherton Thursday night appears to have stepped on to the tracks intentionally, according to a Caltrain spokeswoman.

Southbound Caltrain 192, which left San Francisco at 8:40 p.m. and left Redwood City at 9:28 p.m., struck the person on the train tracks at Watkins Avenue around 9:45 p.m., according to Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn.

The 481 passengers on board the train were not injured, and the train was moved to the Menlo Park station so that they could get off the train, Dunn said.

Trains do not stop in Atherton on weekdays.

Caltrain had resumed service by Friday morning.

The incident marks the fifth fatality on Caltrain tracks so far this year, Dunn said.
