Palo Alto firefighters extracted an elderly couple through their Toyota Echo windshield Monday night after the driver made an early right turn, hit a tree and rolled the car onto its left side.
Emergency crews arrived shortly after the 9-1-1 call at 5:26 p.m. and found the couple responsive and in their seat belts. The man and woman, in their 70s, were traveling east on Lytton Avenue and apparently got confused over how and when to make a right turn onto Middlefield Road, police agent Max Nielepko said. They turned prematurely, bounced over the curb and hit the tree, he said.
No other cars were involved, but firefighters had to tear off the car's windshield in order to pull out the couple, Nielepko said. They emerged uninjured and declined to be transported to a hospital. By 6:30 p.m., the scene was clear.
