Couple Arrested After Blow to Officer

Police were investigating domestic history during couple's argument on street

A woman punched a police officer early Sunday morning in Palo Alto during an attempt by officers to investigate a domestic dispute between she and her boyfriend.

At approximately 12:49 a.m., a driver called police from the first block of Homer Avenue to report that a couple were in a screaming match that seemed to be escalating.

Two officers arrived and detained Dencell Sinclair Fox and Jermelia Williams, both 28, for questioning and realized the they had likely been drinking, Lt. Zach Perron said. The officers started investigating the couple's domestic history for past disturbances, but the two grew agitated, Perron said.

Jermelia, a Palo Alto resident, started resisting the officer and punched him in the jaw. He suffered minor bruising and soreness, Perron said. At the same time, Fox also began resisting another officer.

"Clearly, they did not want this investigated," Perron said.

The officers were able to arrest Jermelia and Fox without further incident, he said. Officers did not find any past domestic charges or complaints with the couple, Perron added.

Fox was booked on suspicion of being drunk in public and resisting or obstructing a police officer. Jermelia was also booked on a resisting charge and on suspicion of battering a police officer, a felony, Perron said. Both were taken to the San Jose Main Jail.
