Fatal Crash on Hwy 101 May Be Result of Car Race

Sunday-morning accident shuts down University Avenue.

A man died Sunday morning, and another was seriously injured, when their car overturned on southbound U.S. Highway 101 in East Palo Alto, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

According to witnesses, the driver of the silver Chevy Malibu appeared to be racing against a black vehicle when he lost control of the car, hit the sound wall and crashed on the University Avenue onramp at around 2:15 a.m., CHP officer Art Montiel said.

The driver died at the scene, and the passenger was transported to a hospital suffering from serious injuries, including possible head trauma, Montiel said.
