Palo Alto police reported 53 incidents of violent crimes in 2012. That’s a decrease of 11 since 2011.

Though the statistics show a drop in violent crimes, robberies inched up by two to 26 from 24. Property crimes in Palo Alto increased 11.4 percent from 1,248 in 2011 to 1,409 last year.

However, the trends in Palo Alto don't mirror the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released figures this week, which reported a nationwide increase of violent crimes and a decrease of property crimes after compiling crime data from 18,000 jurisdictions in 50 states.

The FBI's Uniform Crime Reports also included the number of police officers in the nation’s police departments. Palo Alto has 79 sworn police officers.
