Hazmat Investigation Shuts Down I-280 On-Ramp Near Portola Valley

Authorities shut down Alpine Road on-ramp after finding two 55-gallon drums in the area.

Authorities have shut down an Interstate 280 on-ramp near
Portola Valley Monday morning as a hazardous materials team examines two mysterious containers found there earlier.

Cal Fire Battalion Chief John Pearl said a crew performing roadside cleanup found two plastic 55-gallon drums in the area of the Alpine Road on-ramp at about 8:20 a.m.

Cal Fire, Santa Clara County fire and the Woodside Fire Protection District were called to the scene to investigate what is inside the containers.

It appears the drums might contain some type of oil, Pearl said. There has been very little leakage, and none has spilled into any waterways, he said.

The on-ramp has been shut down, and Pearl did not yet have an
estimate for when it would reopen.
