Palo Alto Man Killed in Los Altos Hills Mystery Crash

Authorities identify a man who was at the wheel of a vehicle that was found 40 feet off Page Mill Road and Paseo del Roble, near Matadero Creek.

The Santa Clara County Coroner has identified the man killed in an apparent single-car accident in Los Altos Hills that is still somewhat of a mystery.

Benjamin Tobin, 28, of Palo Alto was identified as the driver of a red Toyota Tacoma truck that was found off of Page Mill Road near Paseo del Roble on Monday afternoon.

"It looks like the truck veered off the roadway 40 feet and then 15-20 feet down an embankment," said Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Deputy Sgt. Jose Cardoza.

It is not known how long the truck had been there, Cardoza said. "It was not like people driving by could see," Cardoza said. Page Mill Road is frequently traveled, but the truck was not easily visible to drivers. It was only when a jogger, happened to observe the truck off the side of the road and far down the embankment, that 911 was called, he said.

Police won’t know many things about the apparent accident for several weeks, after toxicology and field reports are completed, Sgt. Cardoza said.
