Mountain Lion Cub Seen in Montara Backyard

Residents advised never to approach a mountain lion.

A mountain lion cub was seen in Montara on Sunday evening, San Mateo County emergency officials said.

A woman reported seeing the cub in the backyard of her home in the 1400 block of Ivy Street at about 7 p.m.

Residents who see a mountain lion are advised never to approach the animal, especially one that is feeding or with offspring.

Most mountain lions will avoid confrontations with humans.

From the cited article, "I attempted to document all attacks from 1 January 1890 through 31 December 1990." The article was published in 1991 and, in its conclusions, stated in part, "Attacks on humans increased markedly during the last 2 decades.." That would have been the 1970s and 1980s.

The population is not exploding! Merely slowly rebounding. Mountain Lions are only being forced more and more into residential areas. They are little to no threat to humans in most cases. Look up the statistics of actual mountain lion attacks on humans. You'd be surprised!

What a picture. What a cutie. How can anyone argue with a face like that? That said, this little sweetheart will grow to be a magnificent adult (hopefully). Hard to imagine, but true. Until then and as long as under Mom's care, no way would I approach this little bundle. Once an adult, this one will be nothing to mess with. We have seen more and more documented sightings on the coast over the last few years and not all of those sightings are way back in some innocuous canyon, either. Be careful out there.

So much more likely to be shot by a neighbor or family member... Should we start shooting people because they might one day hurt us? The kill everything not human thesis is so sad and out of touch.

"The kill everything not human thesis is so sad and out of touch." You are so right on, "ark."
