Palo Alto Man, 22, Who Fled From Cops After Baseball Bat Attack Sentenced To 1 Year

A 22-year-old Palo Alto man today was sentenced to one year in county jail after he attacked a 13-year-old boy with a baseball bat during a Portola Valley car burglary in April 2013 and was later found with stolen mail in his car.

Alexander Dombovic was arrested after allegedly rummaging through a car parked in a driveway at a Portola Valley home the night of April 21, 2013, according to prosecutors.

A 13-year-old boy living at the home heard the noise from the burglary and confronted the suspect, who then hit the boy in the shoulder with a baseball bat, causing minor injuries.

Dombovic allegedly drove away in his own SUV, but was then pulled over by San Mateo County sheriff's deputies for allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road with his lights off.

He allegedly drove away from the deputies and a chase ensued until Dombovic lost control of his car and went into a ravine.

Deputies approached him at gunpoint and Dombovic allegedly surrendered saying "this has nothing to do with Boston," according to prosecutors.

He identified as Chechnyan when he was arrested, according to prosecutors.

This incident occurred less than a week after the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, in which a Chechnyam immigrant, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was arrested in connection with the deadly attack.

Allegedly 129 pieces of stolen mail from 18 victims were found in Dombovic's car and deputies also discovered five smashed mailboxes in the area, prosecutors said.

At today's sentencing, he was sentenced to the county jail term, placed on three years' probation and ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution.

He is scheduled to surrender to authorities on June 21. He remains out of custody on $50,000 bail.
