The driver of the vehicle that killed a man on 101 in Palo Alto early Wednesday said the man "was just standing there, in traffic."

A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle on Highway 101 in Palo Alto at 3 a.m. Wednesday has been identified as a 63-year-old man whose last known address was South San Francisco, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 71-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck the man told officers that the man was "just standing there, in the lane, in the middle of traffic," and that as soon as he saw him, he tried to brake and swerve, but it was too late.

When CHP responded to the scene early Wednesday morning, the man was pronounced dead immediately and transported by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office.
