Safety Tips for Holiday Shopping from Palo Alto Police

Stay safe and sound out there!

The Palo Alto Police Department offers safety reminders so you and your purchases stay safe and protected this holiday season.

  • When shopping, try to park in a well-lit portion of the lot or street.
  • When you park your car, try to secure your valuables that you have left in your car. (It is better not to leave valuables in the car.) Make sure you lock your doors, close your windows and activate your car alarm, if you have one. Check your surroundings.
  • While you are shopping, remember to keep your purse close to your body and if you carry a wallet, carry it in your coat pocket or front pants pocket, not in your back pants pocket. Be sure not to carry all of your credit cards with you. Leave your unneeded documents at home.
  • Constantly be aware of your personal items. Know where your purse, cell phone, wallet, packages, etc. are at all times. DO NOT LEAVE THEM UNATTENDED. Do not overburden yourself with packages.
  • When you are done shopping, have your keys in your hand before reaching your car. Take notice of your surroundings. If you see that someone is watching you and that you may be a potential victim, return to a store immediately and call security or 9-1-1. If you are returning to your car to drop off packages and you do not feel they will be safe where you are currently parked, either move your vehicle to another location or go home and drop off your packages.
  • If a valet service is available, use it!
