Support Growing for Palo Alto Gun Buy Back
The City and School Board are unanimous in support.
Both the Palo Alto City Council and the Palo Alto Unified School District Board passed resolutions this week in support of a three city gun buyback to be held on Saturday, Feb. 23. Palo Alto, East Palo Alto and Menlo Park are included in the buyback.
The nonprofit Protect Our Children Bay Area Inc. is behind the effort. The new non-profit was co-founded by James Cook, who is thrilled by the proclamations and the spirit of cooperation from the three cities, “Having the three cities work together so closely and collaboratively is outstanding, and the combination of educators and civic leader support is key to our success,” said Cook. “It feels great to be able to take some positive action locally that we know will help make us safer.”

Residents will receive $100 for a handgun, $200 for a rifle or shotgun, and $300 for an assault weapon. The weapons will be taken in anonymously—no names or license plates will be recorded.

The buyback will be run by the police departments of the three cities involved.
Palo Alto Police Lt. Zach Perron is hopeful that residents will take advantage of the program, “A number of gun owners may choose to use an event like this to dispose of unwanted firearms – it’s an easy and quick way to get rid of them, and also get a little cash in the process. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
