Following tips provided by two officers from outside agencies, police in Palo Alto Tuesday arrested a man in connection with a recent credit union robbery, police said.

After a man robbed the Provident Credit Union at 2390 El Camino Real on Saturday at about 9 a.m., police released a bulletin to local agencies with surveillance images of the suspect.

A San Mateo County sheriff's deputy recognized the suspect and provided Palo Alto police with his name, police said.

The other tip was provided by the suspect's probation officer from the San Mateo County Probation Department, police said.

Palo Alto police conducted further investigation and connected 50-year-old Eddie Darrell Boyce Jr. to the robbery.

Boyce allegedly walked into Provident Credit Union at about 9 a.m. and handed a note demanding money to one of the tellers.

The note claimed the suspect had a gun, though one was never seen, police said. The teller complied with the demands and the suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Boyce had previously been arrested by Redwood City police in May 2012 when he allegedly evaded police and drove around barricades which were set up for President Barack Obama's motorcade during a campaign visit.

In August 2012, Boyce pleaded no contest to felony evading, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said, and he was sentenced to three years of probation.

In addition, Wagstaffe said Boyce was to enter and complete a VA drug and alcohol rehab program in Palo Alto, while being in compliance with a probation officer.

He was on active probation in San Mateo County at the time of the robbery.

Police arrested Boyce at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System at 3801 Miranda Ave. Tuesday at about 9:40 a.m., according to police.

Veterans Affairs police assisted with the arrest, according to Palo Alto police.

Boyce was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of felony robbery. He was scheduled to appear in court today.

After his criminal proceedings in Santa Clara County, Boyce will be extradited to San Mateo County to be disciplined for violating his probation, Wagstaffe said.

Anyone with information about Boyce, or the robbery, is asked to call Palo Alto police at (650) 329-2413 or anonymously to paloalto@tipnow.org or (650) 383-8984.
