A man described as distressed and suicidal died Tuesday after being shot by a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy during a confrontation in Saratoga at around noon.
In a press release issued late Tuesday evening, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup said the man was shot by the deputy striking him in the chest after he became agitated, pulled a blunt metal object and attacked near the intersection of Saratoga and McFarland avenues.
The man, whose identity has not been released yet, struck one of two deputies present with the metal object and the deputy who was hit feared for his life and fired his weapon once.
The suspect was still combative and had to be restrained before medical aid could be rendered and county fire and emergency medical services personnel transported him to an area hospital where he died, Stenderup said.
The two deputies involved in the altercation with the suspect were treated and released from an area hospital due to injuries sustained during the confrontation, Stenderup added.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office is monitoring the investigation into the shooting, he said.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Homicide investigators at 408-808-4431.
