Council to Appoint New Mayor

Vice Mayor Yiaway Yeh is next in line to become mayor.

Palo Alto Mayor Sid Espinosa will end his tenure tonight when the council votes on his replacement and a new vice mayor.

The appointment of a new mayor and vice mayor comes every year at the first January council meeting. The positions are selected following a majority vote by council members.  The new mayor is seated and immediately assumes the duties of the presiding mayor once selected.

At least five votes are required before election to each office.

Mr. Espinosa’s term began with an emphasis on city finances, land use and transportation planning, environmental sustainability, emergency preparedness, and community collaboration for youth well-being.

Espinosa was the first Latino mayor in Palo Alto. Vice Mayor Yiaway Yeh, if elected mayor tonight, will be the second Asian-American to hold that position after Yoriko Kishimoto.

Councilmember Nancy Shepard said last year that Yeh, despite his age, is qualified to be a leader.

"He has a very deep understanding, and compassion for the public work force," Sheperd said.
