Gas Main Replacement Starts Wednesday

The city's utilities department to swap old pipelines with new ones and cautions about impact to Stanford families and nighttime traffic.

Daytime drivers along westbound Page Mill Road will mostly be spared the headache of a gas main replacement, a city announcement shares.

The Palo Alto Utilities department begins to change over from an old to a new gas main and work starts Wednesday, Sept 3, explained spokeswoman Debra Katz. The work will take place on Page Mill Road between Coyote Hill Drive, located a little further West of Foothill Expressway and will continue in phases until late October eastbound to El Camino Real.

In consideration that Page Mill Road serves as a major city artery that connects thousands of commuters to Interstate 280, the city plans to conduct most of the work at night, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. As part of the work, the city will close a lane of traffic.

However, the city does warn of some daytime work "for the first couple of weeks, the work will take place during the day so as not to disturb the Stanford families residing north of Page Mill Road," Katz said.

Commuters can expect to be impacted on several days during the work hours between 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., "so the closed westbound lane will not interfere with the afternoon commute," Katz said.
