Lawmakers Tweets Fly on Debt Bill

What were our elected officials saying on the bills to raise the debt ceiling yesterday? Patch tapped into the Twittersphere to find out.

Updated: July 30 at 8:08 a.m.

Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) sent out a tweet Saturday morning: Dead On Arrival: @SenatorReid's bill a non-starter in the House (and the Senate?) http://j.mp/o2UbyD

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's alternate debt limit bill is not expected to pass the House on Saturday. Boehner's bill was killed in the Senate after passing the House on Friday.

Tweets from lawmakers flew through cyberspace yesterday. Patch tapped the Twittersphere to see what our elected officials were saying.

Rep. Mike Honda, D-San Jose: We must compromise with shared sacrifice in debt negotiations. Budget shouldn't be balanced on the backs of poor & elderly.

Rep. Mike Honda, D-San Jose: I support compromise and not further fueling a crisis that has been politically engineered.

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo: Disheartened by Spkr Boehner's pugnacious style 2nite. Prez is right-compromise not a dirty word. Let's get a fair deal and focus on jobs.

U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto: I just voted against Boehner's phony default bill. We’re closer to financial Armageddon and today's bill wasted precious time.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.: I support a long-term solution that reduces the deficit & ends the uncertainty that’s hurting our economy.

GOP majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, a Bakersfield Republican, fell silent after a two-day tweet blitz praising Republican leadership and bashing Democrats.

Congressional Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi: Numbers to know: 0. # of @HouseDemocrats who voted for GOP Default Act on floor today-it's not balanced, it's not bipartisan.

House Speaker John Boehner: The house has now passed two bills to cut spending & stop a national default. The Senate should act immediately & end this crisis.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: The economic security of every family in American is on the line.

The president had asked his 9.4 million followers to tweet their Republican representatives, triggering a Capitol Hill switchboard meltdown.

President Obama: Thanks for contacting your legislators, and for sticking with us amid our tweeting today. We're done now, we swear.

Boehner and associates' dangerously irresponsible actions are HURTING USA and the world -- by many many trillions. Just look- retirement savings are down, home prices are down, unemployment and foreclosures are high. Boehner's actions will make them a lot worse. Their plans have elements of President Hoover who caused the great depression. Here is what other Presidents have done: The US Debt Ceiling Raises Of The Past 40 Years: Reagan -18 times - 199% increase, H.W Bush -9 times - 48% increase, Clinton -4 times -44% increase, Dubya Bush -7 times - 90% increase, Obama -3 times - 26% increase.
