Measure C: Palo Alto Snuffs Out Bid for Pot Shops
A measure that would have allowed medicinal marijuana dispensaries in Palo Alto is crushed.
Measure C on the Palo Alto ballot went down to defeat 62 percent to 38 percent. If passed, the measure would have allowed up to three medicinal marijuana dispensaries in the city.
Back in 1996, Californians approved Prop 215 allowing for the use of medicinal marijuana. However, the federal government still considers marijuana a banned substance. Clearly, the issue of medicinal marijuana in California is a hazy subject.
There have been problems with crime in cities, such as San Jose, where dispensaries have been allowed to open.
Current Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss, who has just been elected to the city council, is not surprised by the vote. “Palo Alto said we’re a small city” and we don’t want to deal with the negative issues.

Measure C was backed by an organization out of southern California, which didn’t set well with local residents. Councilman Pat Burt said of Measure C “it was viewed by the electorate as not being a grassroots effort.” He said it wasn’t designed by our community to address needs here.
The Palo Alto Police Department declined to comment on the issue. A spokesman called it a political matter.
