Mexican Quake Reminder: Are You Prepared?

Earthquakes are a way of life for those living on or near a fault. Preparedness is key.

 

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake rattled Oaxaca, Mexico this morning, a reminder of the potential damage from a temblor.

The aftershock measured 5.1 magnitude within the following hours of the bigger quake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, there were 22,289 earthquakes worldwide in 2011, of which about only 20 measured above a 7.0 magnitude.

In 2011, there were reported 5,237 earthquakes in the United States. Only one was above a 7.0 magnitude. This year, we are up to 694.

In Palo Alto and the rest of the Peninsula, things have been quiet over the last week, with only a few quakes.

The strongest, a 2.8 magnitude centered in Tres Pinos, Calif. and the weakest four 1.0 magnitude ones centered in Berkeley, Orinda, Chualar and Tres Pinos, Calif.
