New Lunar New Year Stamp Unveiled By Postal Service

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee joined postal officials Wednesday to unveil a new stamp by the U.S. Postal Service to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The "Year of the Horse" stamp, which became available for sale starting today, is the latest in the postal service's 12-year Lunar New Year stamp series, which runs through 2019.

The stamp, which features drums and a small horse in the upper left corner, "signals that fresh beginning" of a new year, Lee said at a news conference held this morning in Chinatown.

"We have a lot to look forward to, a lot of prosperity," Lee said.

Leslie Moe-Kaiser, executive vice president of the national Organization of Chinese Americans, said the USPS honoring the Chinese culture is "a big deal to us."

She said, "It's helping us spread a very important part of our culture to the nation."

David Stowe, San Francisco district manager for the USPS, said today's unveiling event was held in San Francisco because "there's no better place to spend a new year."

The stamp was illustrated by Kam Mak, an artist from Brooklyn, N.Y., who was in attendance at today's event.
